The Harwood Report is intended for informational and educational purposes only. In the report, I go over a sampling of the intriguing trading setups that may be present in the market on a given day. The concepts presented illustrate a portion of the analysis that I do when looking for trading opportunities in the options markets. Portfolio and trade construction are imperative in maximizing returns and minimizing risk, and that is where I have focused my efforts. I hope you find the content inspirational, informative, and educational.

The market has been a whipsaw into the end of quarter. After a large down move on Tuesday, the market reversed on Wednesday to recover those losses. This morning, the markets look to be slightly higher to start the day and this return to a lower volatility move may lead to a return to extending the best trending stocks. Financials across the board are firm, so I will avoid that sector as we will need to see how the market digests the new stress test results before I can get involved based upon technical indicators and option market structure. This morning, we look at CLVS and SNAP as stocks that have interesting trade setups with this in mind.

The market was hit fairly hard yesterday. This morning, we have a bit more of a mixed pre-market with the S&P and Small Caps up small and Technology down small. There has been a significant unwind of positions in some of the year’s biggest winners and biggest losers going into quarter end, but there are still opportunities to play for breakouts in the markets. Today, we highlight TSO and YELP as setups that could breakout in the near term.

The market is weak this morning as the technology sector is pulling back. However, the overall impact thus far has been fairly muted, and so we will continue to look at opportunities for breakouts of ranges that follow recent trends. Today, we highlight EXC and HPE as these types of opportunities.

The market is firm this morning as we come into quarter end. We see many major indexes breaking out of recent ranges and pushing to test their highs. We expect the bullish setups to look better this morning, but we always look for both a bullish and bearish setup in order to balance risk. This morning, we highlight HRB and HAIN as names with favorable risk/reward setups.

The market is mixed this morning with the Technology sector firm and Small Cap stocks weak. The pre-market moves are a continuation of yesterday’s sector rotations. While I would expect major sector rotations to slow at some point, the individual name rotations tend to continue for longer. Given this, I will work through trade setups in LUV and M that extend their current trends.

The market is mixed with a slightly lower lean – there are some key technical levels just below the market so we could be in for a rocky day if that support does not hold. If this occurs, long option plays will be better than equity positions due to defined risk and leverage characteristics. If the market break does not happen, I expect a return to buyers of strong names and sellers of weak names. Given this, I will work through trade setups in CELG and FIT that extend their current trends.

The market is very flat this morning with Technology firm relative to the rest of the market. This is signaling to me that the trend of buying strength and re-positioning into the long Technology sector should continue through the day. Small cap and retail stocks that have struggled will likely struggle relative to the rest of the market if this continues. The names I am focusing on today are again breakout contenders as those names can create great risk/reward. I expect GLW and TRIP to continue their trends and will walk through possible trades in each name.

The market is overall a bit firm this morning with the Technology sector leading the way. This should lead to a slight drop in Implied Volatility through the macro indexes that would then filter through to individual names. The names I am focusing on today are again breakout contenders as those names can create great risk/reward. I expect CAT and FIT to continue their trends and will walk through possible trades in each name.

With the market more stable to start the day, my focus will be on two names that have been trending. I expect these names to continue their trends after breaking out yesterday. With the prevalence of automated trading and trend following systems in the market, we often see that those stocks that have rallied continue to do so and those that have been weak continue to fall. I expect WTW and P to continue their trends and will walk through possible trades in each name.

Because of the pre-market volatility we are seeing, I am focusing on setups in names that I expect to have been less impacted by macro indexes on the market open. There are many names that had intriguing setups from their charts and volatility metrics, but they will be trading significantly lower on the market open with higher Implied Volatility. The trade setups from yesterday’s close in those names would be irrelevant and thus would require analysis during market hours instead of pre-market. There will be a number of trades that present throughout the day today, and I will start by looking for two that will be both have a great risk & reward profile and hopefully be possible to enter soon after the market open. First, I will highlight a bullish opportunity in DE, and I will then highlight my bearish trade for UAA.
